How Do Essential Oils Work?

From aromatherapy to skin application: discover how essential oils interact with your body and how to use them effectively in everyday life.

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts derived from flowers, leaves, bark and roots. Each oil contains hundreds of natural compounds that interact with your body in different ways: through your sense of smell, your skin and your respiratory system.

The three pathways of action

Essential oils work primarily through three channels. Each has its own benefits and ideal applications.

1. Aromatherapy (sense of smell)

When you inhale an essential oil, the scent molecules reach the limbic system in your brain – the area responsible for emotions and memories. That's why a scent can calm you, energise you or lift your mood within seconds.

2. Skin application

Diluted in a carrier oil, essential oils are absorbed through the skin. They are used in massage oils, creams and roll-ons to relieve tension, improve circulation and nourish the skin.

3. Direct inhalation

Direct inhalation (e.g. with hot water) can clear the airways and relieve cold symptoms. Particularly effective: eucalyptus, peppermint and tea tree.
