Application & Key Features
Application:
Only to be used diluted in a carrier oil for local skin applications (massages, rub-ins). Can also be used in a diffuser (use sparingly).
Important – highly concentrated:
Wintergreen oil is one of the most potent essential oils. Max. 1% dilution (2 drops in 10 ml carrier oil such as Organic MCT Oil). Massage into the desired skin area – the pleasant warming sensation develops within a few minutes. In a diffuser, 2-3 drops create a fresh, sweet-medicinal room fragrance.
Perfect Blending Partners
Wintergreen oil is an intense top/heart note that blends beautifully:
- For cooling + warming: Peppermint, Corn Mint (menthol's cooling meets methyl salicylate's warmth – perfect for aroma massages after exercise).
- For harmony: Lavender (softens the intensity and adds relaxation).
- For alpine depth: Swiss Pine, Spruce (woodsy notes complement the sweet warmth beautifully).

The Professor's Knowledge: The Scent Note
Wintergreen oil is truly unique in the world of essential oils: it consists of ~98% of a single molecule – methyl salicylate. This is extremely rare. Most essential oils contain dozens of compounds; Wintergreen, however, is almost a pure-substance oil. Chemically, methyl salicylate is an ester of salicylic acid – a natural compound produced by the plant. This is what gives it its characteristic intense warming sensation on the skin. It activates the heat receptors (TRPV1) – the opposite of menthol, which stimulates the cold receptors (TRPM8). That's why the combination of Wintergreen and Peppermint is so fascinating: warm meets cool – both receptor systems are activated simultaneously.
The Plant
Gaultheria procumbens is an evergreen dwarf shrub from the Ericaceae (heath) family. This low-growing plant with its leathery, glossy leaves thrives in cool, shady woodland areas. The essential oil is extracted from the leaves through steam distillation. The plant produces methyl salicylate as a natural defence compound – for us, a precious natural product with a uniquely warming aroma.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is Wintergreen oil mainly used for?
Wintergreen oil is best known for its intense warming sensation on the skin during aroma massage. Diluted in carrier oil, it is massaged into the skin – for example, after exercise or after an active day for a pleasant warming experience.
Why does Wintergreen oil need to be dosed so carefully?
Wintergreen consists of 98% methyl salicylate – a highly concentrated natural compound. In high concentration, it can cause skin irritation. Therefore: always dilute to max. 1% (2 drops in 10 ml carrier oil). Never apply undiluted!
Can I use Wintergreen oil in a diffuser?
Yes, but sparingly! 2-3 drops are enough for a sweet, medicinal-fresh room scent. It pairs wonderfully in the diffuser with Lavender or Swiss Pine.
Can I use Wintergreen oil together with Peppermint?
Yes, it's actually a classic combination! The warmth of Wintergreen (methyl salicylate) meets the coolness of Peppermint (menthol) – ideal for pleasant aroma massages after exercise. Dilute both in carrier oil.
Is Wintergreen oil suitable for children?
No. Wintergreen oil should not be used on children under 12 years of age. For children, we recommend Lavender instead.
How should I store the oil?
Keep away from direct light and heat sources. The amber glass bottle protects the oil from UV rays. Close tightly after each use.
