How to use & what makes it special

Use:
In the sauna, on the infusion water. Diluted in carrier oil for a massage after sport or a day in the mountains. In the diffuser, sparingly.

Getting it right:
In the sauna, 2–3 drops in the infusion water – this is where mountain pine plays its strength: it holds up to the heat and fills the cabin like no other oil. For a massage after a hike or a day of skiing, dilute 3–5 drops in 10 ml of carrier oil (e.g. Organic MCT Oil) and work through legs, shoulders and back – the warm, penetrating feeling arrives within minutes. In a diffuser, 2–3 drops are enough, half the amount of the other conifer oils. Tip: two drops in a warm foot bath after a day on your feet.

Perfect blending partners

Mountain pine is a powerful top note – always use less of it than of the others:

• To round it off: Silver fir (the sweetness of fir takes the edges off mountain pine).
• For the whole forest: Spruce (one drop of mountain pine to three of spruce – the classic infusion blend).
• For the evening: Swiss stone pine (warm stone pine wood beneath the resin of the Latsche).

The scent profile

• Main aroma: Powerful and resinous, with the clarity of air above 2,000 metres. The scent you meet walking through a stand of Latschen after rain.
• Secondary note: Spicy and warm, almost peppery – the trait that separates mountain pine from every other pine.
• Nuance: A green-herbaceous base from bornyl acetate that softens the whole and gives it depth.

Intensity: High – the strongest oil in our range. Always dose it at half the strength of the other conifer oils: two drops do what a fir would need four for.

The chemistry of the oil

South Tyrolean mountain pine has a terpene profile that reflects the harsh conditions of its habitat. Delta-3-carene is a monoterpene with a sweet, resinous character – one of the molecules we associate with the smell of mountain air. Beta-phellandrene adds a fresh, slightly mentholic and citrus dimension, while alpha- and beta-pinene bring the classic pine freshness. Bornyl acetate contributes a warm, herbaceous note that smooths the edges. What makes the Latsche special is altitude: at 1,500–2,500 metres, intense UV radiation, low temperatures and short growing seasons push the plant to produce higher concentrations of protective terpenes – a natural stress response that yields a more aromatic oil. It is the same principle that makes high-altitude lavender more prized than lowland lavender.

The plant

Pinus mugo is not a tree but a shrub: it grows low and creeping, one to three metres tall, spreading horizontally across rocky alpine ground. It thrives between 1,500 and 2,500 metres, often above the tree line, where no other conifer survives. In the mountains of South Tyrol the “Latsche”, as it is called here, has been part of the culture for centuries: farmers distilled the needles in simple copper stills, and the oil stood in every mountain house. The plant is extraordinarily tough – in winter it bends under metres of snow and rises again in spring. Harvesting is slow and laborious: it is done by hand, on steep slopes, and the plant regrows only a few centimetres a year.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Why is mountain pine so much stronger than the other conifer oils?

Because it grows where conditions are extreme. Above the tree line the plant produces more protective terpenes, and those end up in the oil. In practice: half the dose compared with a fir, same result.

Can I use it in the sauna?

That is where it is at its best. Mix 2–3 drops into the infusion water, never neat onto the stones. The resinous scent holds the heat right through the infusion.

What is the difference from Scots pine and Swiss stone pine?

Mountain pine (this oil) is a high-altitude shrub and gives the most intense, resinous scent. Scots pine is a proper tree with a drier, more “classic” character. Swiss stone pine smells warm and sweet-woody – something else entirely.

Is it suitable for the skin?

Only diluted, and more carefully than the others: 3 drops per 10 ml of carrier oil is already enough. Always patch test on a small area on the inside of your arm and wait 24 hours. Avoid contact with the eyes – this oil irritates them easily.

Is it suitable for children?

In the diffuser, very sparingly, generally from age 6. It is not suitable for infants and toddlers, and anyone with asthma should avoid it.

How should I store it?

Cool, dark and tightly closed. The amber glass blocks UV radiation. Pine oils are comparatively stable and keep their quality for years when stored properly.
