    • Organic Larch

Organic Larch from South Tyrol – The Tree That Turns to Gold

Organic larch essential oil by Viworo, 10 ml amber glass bottle

      Benefits at a glance

      • Bright, fresh-resinous, lightly citrus: The clearest of all conifer scents. Where spruce warms, larch opens up: crisp mountain air, fresh resin and a squeeze of lemon.
      • It wakes the room: Larch never feels heavy. This is the diffuser oil for the morning, for the study, for the moments when you want clarity rather than cosiness.
      • The rarer conifer: In our South Tyrolean mountain forests, larch grows where other trees give up, and its needles can only be harvested in a short window. This is not a bulk oil.
      • Organic quality: 100% pure and natural, steam-distilled from needles and twig tips. From organic farming.

How to use & what makes it special

      Use:
In the diffuser for clear, fresh air. Diluted in carrier oil for massage. In the sauna, on the infusion water. In the wardrobe, for the scent of wood.

      Getting it right:
In a diffuser, 3–4 drops are enough – larch announces itself immediately, so start sparingly. It is the right oil for the morning or the desk, when the air in the room feels still. For a massage, dilute 3–5 drops in 10 ml of carrier oil (e.g. Organic MCT Oil). In the sauna, mix 2–3 drops into the infusion water – the citrus note handles the heat well. Tip: one drop on a wooden disc in the wardrobe – larch is the wood mountain wardrobes have always been built from.

      Perfect blending partners

Larch is a clear, sharply drawn top note that lightens heavy blends:

      • For the whole forest: Spruce (larch brings the light, spruce the ground).
      • For the evening: Swiss stone pine (warm wood beneath a bright top – the classic alpine pairing).
      • For the morning: Sweet orange (citrus on citrus – surprisingly fresh).
Organic larch essential oil by Viworo, 30 ml amber glass bottle

Which conifer oil suits you? From gentlest to strongest: Silver fir (sweet, fruity) → Spruce (round, balsamic) → Larch (bright, resinous – this oil) → Swiss stone pine (warm, woody) → Mountain pine (the strongest). Larch is the only one with that citrus edge: if conifer oils all smell alike to you, try this one.

      The scent profile

      • Main aroma: Bright and fresh-resinous, with the clarity of mountain air on a cloudless day. Lighter and “higher” than the other conifer oils.
      • Secondary note: A citrus edge, almost green lime – the marker by which you tell larch from spruce and pine at once.
      • Nuance: A base of dry resin – exactly what you smell running your hand over a sunlit larch trunk.

Intensity: Medium – present and direct. Larch makes itself known immediately and then holds back: a few drops in the diffuser are plenty.

      The chemistry of the oil

Larch is an oil dominated by monoterpenes, which is why it reads so clear and immediate. Alpha-pinene and beta-pinene build the classic conifer freshness, delta-3-carene contributes the dry, resinous character typical of heavily resinous trees, and limonene – this is the difference – pushes forward that citrus edge which stays in the background in other conifer oils. Small amounts of bornyl acetate and camphene keep the scent from turning sharp. Being so rich in monoterpenes, the oil is sensitive to oxygen: store it cool, dark and tightly closed, and use it within a reasonable time.

      The plant

Larix decidua, the European larch, is the only native conifer that drops its needles in autumn. Before letting them go it turns them a blazing golden yellow – those are the slopes that look lit from within in October, one of the finest sights in the Alps. It grows where hardly any other tree endures, up beyond 2,000 metres, and precisely for that reason its timber is the hardest and most durable of the alpine conifers: in the mountains it has always been used for beams, roof shingles and wardrobes. The trunk also yields a prized resin, Venice turpentine, tapped for centuries by boring into the wood. For the essential oil, however, it is not the resin that is used but needles and twig tips, harvested in a short window while they are still green and full.

      Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How does larch differ from the other conifer oils?

In brightness. Spruce and Swiss stone pine have a warm, woody base; larch is bright, dry and carries that citrus edge from limonene. If you want a forest scent that wakes you up rather than wraps around you, this is your oil.

How many drops do I need for a room?

For a living room of around 25 m², 3–4 drops in the diffuser are enough; in a bedroom, 2. Larch is direct: better a few drops, or it covers everything else.

Can I use it in the sauna?

Yes. Mix 2–3 drops into the infusion water, never neat onto the stones. The citrus note handles the heat well and makes the infusion fresher than the classic pine oils.

Is it suitable for the skin?

Only diluted: three to five drops per 10 ml of carrier oil. Anyone with a known allergy to turpentine or colophony should avoid it – larch is botanically close to those resins. Before first use, always patch test on a small area of skin and wait 24 hours.

How long does a bottle last?

With daily diffuser use (3–4 drops a day) a 10 ml bottle lasts about two and a half months, the 30 ml bottle over six. The large bottle costs a little over twice as much and holds three times the oil.

      How should I store it?

Cool, dark and tightly closed. Larch is rich in monoterpenes and oxidises if the bottle is left open – close it right after use. An oxidised oil irritates the skin considerably more than a fresh one.
