    • Organic Lemongrass

Organic Lemongrass Oil – Fresh Energy from India

      Lemongrass Cymbopogon citratus plant leaves

      Benefits at a Glance

      • Fresh, lemony & energising: A bright, vibrant citrus-herbal scent that wakes up the senses – like a burst of fresh lemon with a green, grassy depth.
      • The natural energiser: Lemongrass is the oil of clarity and drive – it sharpens focus, lifts fatigue and creates an atmosphere of fresh productivity.
      • The scent of summer evenings: The fresh, lemony classic for warm evenings – on the terrace, in the garden or on the balcony.
      • Organic quality: 100% pure and natural, steam-distilled from fresh leaves. From organic farming. From India.

      Application & Special Features

      Application:
In a diffuser for a fresh, energising atmosphere. Diluted in carrier oil for massage and muscle care. As a fresh note for scenting rooms and as a cleaning additive.

      Targeted uses:
In a diffuser (3-5 drops) for an instantly refreshing, energising atmosphere – perfect for the home office, morning routine or any time you need a mental boost. For muscle care after exercise, dilute 2-3 drops in 10 ml of carrier oil (e.g. Organic MCT Oil) and massage into tired muscles. On warm summer evenings, use it in an outdoor diffuser or add it to a scented body spray. For natural cleaning, add a few drops to your cleaning water – lemongrass cuts through grease and leaves a fresh scent. Tip: Mix 2 drops lemongrass + 3 drops lavender in the diffuser for a focused-but-calm work blend.

      Perfect Blending Partners

Lemongrass is a bright top note with a fresh, lemony-herbal character:

      • For clean freshness: Tea Tree (lemony freshness meets medicinal clean – the air purification powerhouse).
      • For floral balance: Lavender (bright energy meets floral calm – energised but not wired).
      • For woody grounding: Cedar (vibrant citrus on a warm woody base – fresh and sophisticated).

      From India's Tropical Fields

Lemongrass has been valued in Indian tradition for centuries – in cuisine, in Ayurveda and for scenting the home. The tropical climate of India produces lemongrass of exceptional citral content and aromatic intensity.

Lemongrass vs. Citronella: These two are often confused – and no wonder, they're closely related. Both belong to the Cymbopogon genus. Lemongrass (C. citratus) has a brighter, more lemony scent and is used in aromatherapy, cooking and skincare. Citronella (C. nardus or C. winterianus) has a more woody-rosy character and is the classic scent for summer evenings. Lemongrass offers the wider range of aromatic applications.

      The Scent Profile

      • Main aroma: Fresh, intensely lemony and vibrant – a bright, clean citrus scent with a distinctive green, grassy character that sets it apart from true lemon.
      • Secondary note: Herbaceous and slightly sweet, with a warm, tea-like undertone that adds depth and natural warmth.
      • Nuance: A subtle, earthy-green base note that anchors the bright citrus top – a reminder that this scent comes from tropical grass, not citrus fruit.

Intensity: Medium-high – bright, fresh and distinctly present. Lemongrass fills a room with energising freshness without being harsh. The kind of scent that makes you take a deep breath and feel more awake.

      The chemistry of the oil

Lemongrass oil is dominated by Citral (70-85%), which is actually a mixture of two geometric isomers: Geranial (citral a, ~45%) and Neral (citral b, ~35%). Geranial has a stronger, sharper lemon character, while neral is softer and more rose-like – together they create the characteristic bright-yet-complex lemongrass scent. Citral is one of the most studied molecules in aromatherapy: it has demonstrated antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties in numerous studies. Myrcene (5-12%) adds a fresh, balsamic-herbal note and acts as a synergist, enhancing the effectiveness of other molecules. Geraniol contributes a subtle floral dimension – the combination of citral and geraniol is what gives lemongrass its unmistakable scent. Indian lemongrass is particularly prized for its high citral content, a result of the tropical growing conditions with abundant rainfall and warm temperatures. Important note: Citral has a higher skin sensitisation potential than many essential oil molecules – always dilute well (max 1-2%) for skin application.

      The Plant

Cymbopogon citratus (Lemongrass) is a tall, aromatic perennial grass from the Poaceae (grass) family – making it one of the few essential oils that comes from a grass rather than a tree or shrub. Native to tropical Asia, particularly India and Sri Lanka, lemongrass grows in dense, fountain-like clumps reaching 1-1.5 metres in height. The long, slender leaves are rich in aromatic oil glands and release their characteristic lemony scent when crushed. In Indian and Southeast Asian cuisine, the thick, lower stem sections are used in curries, soups and teas – the plant is as valued in the kitchen as in aromatherapy. India is one of the world's largest producers of lemongrass oil, where it has been cultivated for centuries both for its aromatic oil and as a traditional Ayurvedic remedy for fever and digestive complaints.

      Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I use lemongrass outdoors on summer evenings?

Yes, that is one of its most popular uses. In an outdoor diffuser it scents the terrace or garden with a fresh citrus note; well diluted in carrier oil or witch hazel it makes a fragrant body spray. Our oil is a pure essential oil for fragrance and aromatherapy – it is not a tested repellent or a biocidal product.

Can I apply lemongrass oil to the skin?

Yes, but always well diluted. Citral has a higher sensitisation potential than many essential oil compounds. Use maximum 1-2 drops in 10 ml of carrier oil. Always perform a patch test first, especially if you have sensitive skin.

What is the difference between lemongrass and citronella?

Both belong to the Cymbopogon genus but are different species. Lemongrass (C. citratus) has a brighter, more lemony scent and is used in aromatherapy, cooking and skincare. Citronella (C. nardus/winterianus) has a more woody-rosy scent and is the classic for summer evenings. Lemongrass is the more versatile of the two.

Can I use lemongrass for cleaning?

Absolutely. Lemongrass is excellent for natural cleaning. Citral is a natural degreaser and antimicrobial, and the fresh scent leaves any surface smelling clean and energising. Add a few drops to your cleaning water or spray bottle.

      Is lemongrass suitable for children?

In the diffuser, lemongrass is generally suitable for children over 6 years in low doses (2-3 drops). For skin application on children, use extra caution due to the sensitisation potential of citral – dilute 1 drop in 10 ml carrier oil and always patch test first. Not recommended for children under 3 years.

How should I store the oil?

Keep away from direct light and heat sources. The amber glass bottle protects from UV radiation. Close tightly after use. Lemongrass oil retains its quality for several years when stored correctly.
