For natural cleaning, add a few drops to your cleaning water – lemongrass cuts through grease and leaves a fresh scent. The chemistry of the oil

Lemongrass oil is dominated by Citral (70-85%), which is actually a mixture of two geometric isomers: Geranial (citral a, ~45%) and Neral (citral b, ~35%). Geranial has a stronger, sharper lemon character, while neral is softer and more rose-like – together they create the characteristic bright-yet-complex lemongrass scent. Citral is one of the most studied molecules in aromatherapy: it has demonstrated antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties in numerous studies. Myrcene (5-12%) adds a fresh, balsamic-herbal note and acts as a synergist, enhancing the effectiveness of other molecules. Geraniol contributes a subtle floral dimension – the combination of citral and geraniol is what gives lemongrass its unmistakable scent. Indian lemongrass is particularly prized for its high citral content, a result of the tropical growing conditions with abundant rainfall and warm temperatures. Important note: Citral has a higher skin sensitisation potential than many essential oil molecules – always dilute well (max 1-2%) for skin application.

The Plant

Cymbopogon citratus (Lemongrass) is a tall, aromatic perennial grass from the Poaceae (grass) family – making it one of the few essential oils that comes from a grass rather than a tree or shrub. Native to tropical Asia, particularly India and Sri Lanka, lemongrass grows in dense, fountain-like clumps reaching 1-1.5 metres in height. The long, slender leaves are rich in aromatic oil glands and release their characteristic lemony scent when crushed. In Indian and Southeast Asian cuisine, the thick, lower stem sections are used in curries, soups and teas – the plant is as valued in the kitchen as in aromatherapy. India is one of the world's largest producers of lemongrass oil, where it has been cultivated for centuries both for its aromatic oil and as a traditional Ayurvedic remedy for fever and digestive complaints.

Our oil is a pure essential oil for fragrance and aromatherapy – it is not a tested repellent or a biocidal product.

Can I apply lemongrass oil to the skin?

Yes, but always well diluted. Citral has a higher sensitisation potential than many essential oil compounds. Use maximum 1-2 drops in 10 ml of carrier oil. Always perform a patch test first, especially if you have sensitive skin.

What is the difference between lemongrass and citronella?

Both belong to the Cymbopogon genus but are different species. Lemongrass (C. citratus) has a brighter, more lemony scent and is used in aromatherapy, cooking and skincare. Citronella (C. nardus/winterianus) has a more woody-rosy scent and is the classic for summer evenings. Lemongrass is the more versatile of the two.

Can I use lemongrass for cleaning?

Absolutely. Lemongrass is excellent for natural cleaning. Citral is a natural degreaser and antimicrobial, and the fresh scent leaves any surface smelling clean and energising. Add a few drops to your cleaning water or spray bottle.

Is lemongrass suitable for children?

In the diffuser, lemongrass is generally suitable for children over 6 years in low doses (2-3 drops).
