The Basics

What exactly are essential oils?

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts obtained from flowers, leaves, stems, roots, or fruits of aromatic plants. They are primarily extracted through steam distillation or cold pressing. Each oil contains hundreds of chemical compounds – terpenes, phenols, aldehydes – that give it its characteristic scent and unique properties. Despite their name, they are not "oils" in the traditional sense: they are volatile compounds that evaporate into the air.

What is the difference between essential oils and fragrance oils?

The difference is fundamental. Essential oils are 100% natural, extracted directly from plants and containing their active compounds. Fragrance oils (also known as perfume oils) are synthetically created in a laboratory and merely imitate the scent – without offering any therapeutic benefits. For aromatherapy and skin application, always use pure essential oils.

Safe Use

How do I apply essential oils to the skin?

Essential oils must always be diluted in a carrier oil before applying to the skin. The recommended ratio is 2–3 drops per 10 ml of carrier oil such as sweet almond oil or jojoba oil. This corresponds to a concentration of approximately 1%. Before first use, always perform a patch test: apply a small amount of diluted oil to the inside of your forearm and wait 24 hours.

How many drops should I use in a diffuser?

For a standard diffuser (100–200 ml), use 3–5 drops of essential oil. Don't run the diffuser for more than 30 minutes at a time and ensure the room is well ventilated. Too much oil can cause headaches or nausea. For larger spaces, you can slightly increase the amount, but less is always a good starting point.

Are essential oils safe for children and pets?

Extra caution is needed here. Many essential oils are not suitable for children under 6 years of age. For cats, several oils can be toxic (eucalyptus, tea tree, peppermint). The same principle applies to dogs, though with fewer restrictions. When diffusing in rooms where animals are present, make sure they can leave the room freely. Check our safety guidelines for detailed information.

Quality and Storage

How long do essential oils last?

Shelf life depends on the type of oil. Citrus oils (lemon, sweet orange) last about 1–2 years. Floral and herbal oils (lavender, tea tree) last 2–3 years. Wood and resin oils (Swiss stone pine) can last over 5 years. Always store in dark glass bottles, in a cool place away from light.

How do I recognise a high-quality essential oil?

A high-quality essential oil is 100% pure and natural, with no additives, fillers, or synthetic fragrances. Check the label for: the botanical Latin name (e.g. Lavandula angustifolia), the country of origin, and the extraction method. Organic quality ensures the plants were grown without chemical pesticides. Be wary of suspiciously low prices: genuine rose or melissa oil is naturally expensive.

Aromatherapy and Wellbeing

How does aromatherapy work?

Aromatherapy uses essential oils to influence physical and mental wellbeing. When you inhale an essential oil, the aromatic molecules reach the limbic system in the brain – the area responsible for emotions, memory, and mood. This is why lavender can calm, peppermint can energise, and bergamot can uplift your mood.

Can essential oils help with stress and sleep problems?

Several scientific studies confirm the calming effects of certain oils. Lavender is the most researched oil for relaxation and sleep: it reduces cortisol (the stress hormone) and promotes deep sleep. Swiss stone pine has also been the subject of studies demonstrating its positive effect on sleep quality. A few drops in your diffuser before bedtime or on your pillow can make a noticeable difference.

Can I create my own blends?

Absolutely! Creating your own blends is one of the most creative aspects of aromatherapy. Some classic combinations: lavender + sweet orange for relaxation, peppermint + lemon for energy, eucalyptus + mountain pine for respiratory support. Start with 2–3 oils and experiment step by step.

Can I use essential oils in skincare?

Yes, many essential oils are excellent for skincare – always diluted in a carrier oil. Tea tree is known for its antibacterial properties (ideal for blemish-prone skin), lavender soothes irritated skin, and bergamot helps even out the complexion. You can add them to serums, creams, or create personalised roll-ons with jojoba oil as a base.
