How to Make a Roll-On with Essential Oils
The complete guide: from choosing the right carrier oil to proper dilution, ready-made recipes and safety rules. Everything you need to create your own personalised roll-on.
What is a roll-on and why is it so practical?
A roll-on is a small bottle with a rolling ball that lets you apply a blend of essential oils directly to your skin. It's the simplest and safest way to use essential oils in daily life:
🎯 Precise dosage
The ball applies just the right amount every time. No waste, no mess.
👜 Always with you
Fits in any pocket, bag or toiletry kit. Ready to use anywhere.
🔒 Safely diluted
The essential oil is already properly diluted in the carrier oil. Safe application every time.
What you need
1. Roll-on bottle
Usually dark glass (amber or cobalt blue), 15 ml capacity. Dark glass protects the oils from light.
2. Carrier oil (base)
The oil that "carries" the essential oil onto the skin and dilutes it. It fills about 96% of the bottle. See below for which one to choose.
3. Essential oil(s)
Just a few drops – essential oils are highly concentrated. The choice depends on the desired effect (relaxation, energy, headache...).
Which carrier oil to choose?
The carrier oil is the heart of your roll-on. Here are the three best options:
| Carrier oil | Ideal for | Absorption | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| MCT Oil Bio ⭐ | Everyday roll-ons, face | Very fast | Our #1 pick – odourless, ultra-light, never goes rancid |
| Jojoba Oil Bio | All skin types, face | Fast | Similar to skin's natural sebum. Never goes rancid |
| Sweet Almond Oil Bio | Dry skin, massage | Medium | Nourishing and gentle. Ideal for sensitive skin and children |
💡 Our recommendation
For roll-ons we recommend MCT or Jojoba: they absorb quickly, leave no oily residue and have a virtually unlimited shelf life. MCT is perfect for everyday use thanks to its zero scent, Jojoba is ideal for the face.
The golden rule: dilution
Essential oils are too concentrated for neat use on skin. Correct dilution is essential for both safety and effectiveness.
📐 Dilution chart for a 15 ml roll-on
| Concentration | Drops of essential oil | Recommended use |
|---|---|---|
| 1% | 3 drops | Sensitive skin, face, children (6+ years) |
| 2% | 6 drops | Light daily use |
| 3% | 9 drops | Targeted, temporary use (muscle tension, headache) |
| 4% ⭐ | ~12 drops | Daily use for adults (the standard concentration) |
| 5% | 15 drops | Adults only, short-term, specific areas (not face) |
⚠️ Important rule
When in doubt, use fewer drops. You can always add more, but you can't take them out. For your first roll-on, start with 4% (about 12 drops per 15 ml).
How to make your roll-on – step by step
Choose your recipe
Decide on the desired effect (relaxation, energy, headache...) and choose your essential oils. Ready-made recipes are below.
Add the essential oils
With the bottle empty, add the essential oil drops first. This way you can count them precisely.
Fill with carrier oil
Fill the rest of the bottle with your chosen carrier oil (Jojoba, MCT or Sweet Almond). Leave a small gap at the top for the ball.
Insert the ball and close
Press the roll-on ball into the bottle and screw the cap on tight. Shake gently to mix.
Label and date
Write the blend name and date of preparation on a label. This way you always know what's inside and when it was made.
Where to apply the roll-on
🖐️ Wrists
The most popular spot. Apply and breathe deeply. Perfect for stress and focus.
🧠 Temples
For headaches and tension. Apply with gentle circular motions.
👃 Behind the ears
A warm zone where the scent lasts long. Ideal as a natural perfume.
🦶 Soles of feet
The skin is thicker and tolerates oils well. Ideal in the evening before bed.

Storage and shelf life

- Shelf life: with Jojoba or MCT as the base, a roll-on lasts 6–12 months. With Sweet Almond Oil about 3–6 months
- Always label the date of preparation
- Changes in smell or colour? Time to make a new one
- Don't share your roll-on for hygiene reasons (the ball touches the skin)
⚠️ Safety rules
Never do
- Never apply essential oils neat to the skin – always diluted in carrier oil
- Never near the eyes – when using peppermint or eucalyptus at the temples, keep your distance
- Never on open wounds or irritated skin
- Never on newborns or children under 6 without expert advice – avoid peppermint and eucalyptus under age 6
Always do
- Patch test: before using a new roll-on, apply it to the inside of your wrist and wait 24 hours
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: consult your doctor before use
- Pets: many essential oils are toxic to cats and dogs. Don't apply the roll-on where animals can lick
- Phototoxic oils: lemon, bergamot and other citrus oils can cause skin discolouration in sunlight. Only apply to covered areas or in the evening
- In case of reaction: remove with carrier oil (not water). Water doesn't dissolve essential oils
