The chemistry of the oil
Sage oil is a chemically complex oil with an unusual main component: thujone. Thujone is a monoterpene ketone – a molecular class treated with caution in aromatherapy because it can have neurotoxic effects at high doses. That is why the rule applies: never overdose sage. But at normal aromatherapy dosages, it is precisely this thujone that creates the herbal-cleansing character that makes sage so unique. Added to this are 1,8-cineole (fresh, clarifying) and camphor (warming, invigorating) – a trio that makes sage one of the most versatile herbal oils. In blends, sage is the "master of herbs": it defines, cleanses and gives every composition a Mediterranean character.
The Plant
Salvia officinalis (Common Sage) is an evergreen subshrub from the Lamiaceae (mint) family. Originally from the Mediterranean region, it has been valued as a medicinal and culinary herb since antiquity. The name "Salvia" derives from the Latin "salvare" (to save, to heal) – a testament to the high esteem in which it has been held throughout history. The plant grows 40-80 cm tall and has characteristic grey-green, slightly downy leaves. The essential oil is extracted from the leaves and flowering tops through steam distillation.

What is sage oil mainly used for?
In aromatherapy, sage is primarily known for three things: air purification (cleanses and purifies room air), a fresh, clear atmosphere (the herbal scent refreshes any room) and mental clarity (promotes concentration and clear thinking).
Why do I need to use sage oil sparingly?
Sage contains thujone – a molecule that is not well tolerated in high doses. At normal aromatherapy dosages (2-4 drops in a diffuser, max. 2% on skin) it is safe. Simply do not overdose and do not use continuously over extended periods.
What is the difference between Common Sage and Clary Sage?
Common Sage (Salvia officinalis) has an herbal-camphoraceous profile and contains thujone. Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) is softer, sweeter and more floral – it contains no thujone and is overall milder. Both are "sage", but with very different characters.
Can I use sage oil in a diffuser?
Absolutely! 2-4 drops are sufficient. Especially popular for air purification and mental clarity. It harmonises beautifully with rosemary for a Mediterranean herbal atmosphere or with lemon for refreshing clarity.
Is sage oil suitable for children?
