Clary sage oil has an exceptionally high ester content – Linalyl acetate (50-75%) makes it one of the most ester-rich essential oils in existence. Salvia sclarea (Clary Sage) is a biennial or short-lived perennial herb from the Lamiaceae (mint) family. Native to the Mediterranean region and Central Asia, it can reach 1-1.2 metres in height with large, fuzzy, heart-shaped leaves and tall spikes of lavender-blue to pink flowers. The "sclarea" in its name derives from the Latin "clarus" (clear), referencing its historical use in eye care – it was known as "clear eye" in English and "Muskatellersalbei" (muscatel sage) in German, as brewers used it to flavour muscatel wine. The essential oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and flowering tops, with the flowers contributing much of the sweet, musky character. Unlike common sage, clary sage is gentle and safe for aromatherapy use.
