White Horehound Marrubium vulgare extract bottle with dropper

The bitter plant of Mediterranean tradition

White Horehound (Marrubium vulgare) – in Italian Marrubio, in German Weißer Andorn – belongs to the Lamiaceae family, the same family as rosemary and sage. The Latin name Marrubium likely derives from the Hebrew marrob (bitter) – a reference to the unmistakable taste of the leaves.

Hippocrates counted it among the fundamental plants; medieval monks cultivated it in cloister gardens. It remains one of the classic ingredients in Italian amari (bitter liqueurs). Alcohol content: 30% Vol.

      It’s this simple

      Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What does the name „Marrubium“ mean?

The name likely derives from the Hebrew marrob, which means „bitter". A reference to the characteristic taste of the leaves – one of the most bitter plants of the Mediterranean flora.

Is it the Horehound from throat lozenges?

Yes, it’s the same plant. In folk tradition Horehound has been used in various forms for centuries. Here you’ll find the pure hydroalcoholic extract, without sugar or added flavourings – the classic of herbal tradition.

Marrubio tea benefits – how much to take?

The traditional dosage is 5–10 drops in a glass of water or herbal tea, 2–3 times per day, ideally before meals. Start with the lower dose the first time. You can also use it in place of a Marrubio tea.

      What does it taste like?

Very bitter – that’s the main characteristic of the plant. If you don’t enjoy bitter notes: dilute it in herbal tea or add a bit of honey. If you know Italian amari, the taste will feel familiar.

      Is this a mother tincture?

No. A classic mother tincture (tintura madre) is made at a 1:10 ratio – one part plant to ten parts solvent. This is a 1:1 fluid extract: one part plant to one part hydroalcoholic solution, and therefore considerably more concentrated. Both preserve the full plant spectrum; the difference is strength.

Can I combine Horehound with other plants?

Yes, in herbal tradition Horehound is combined with other bitter plants – such as Gentian, Dandelion, or Wormwood. If you take any medication, talk to your doctor first.

How do I store the extract?

Away from light and heat sources. The amber glass bottle protects the contents. Refrigeration is not necessary.
