The Viworo Philosophy: Where Science Meets the Soul of Nature

Why genuine essential oils are so much more than just a scent – and how to recognise what truly matters when it comes to quality.

In a world full of artificial aromas, the genuine has become a rare luxury. At Viworo, we don't sell mere "fragrance". We select essential oils that preserve the complex biochemistry of the plant world – unadulterated, organic, and alive. Why does this matter? Because an essential oil only reaches its full potential when its molecular structure is intact. Here is our quality promise to you – transparent and without compromise.

Botanical precision

Why the Latin name matters

Have you ever wondered why we always state the Latin name? Here's an example: rosemary is not just rosemary. Rosmarinus officinalis ct. Cineole is stimulating and promotes concentration. Rosmarinus officinalis ct. Verbenone is gentle on the skin and used in skincare. Same name, completely different effect. That's why we pay meticulous attention to the chemotype – only when the exact subspecies is clear can the effect be guaranteed.

Your quality guarantee

Botanical precision isn't technical jargon – it's your quality guarantee. For every oil in our shop, you'll find the full botanical name, chemotype, and origin. So you always know exactly what's in your bottle. For example: our true lavender is Lavandula angustifolia – not to be confused with lavandin (Lavandula × intermedia), which has a completely different scent profile and properties.

Terroir – origin is everything

The soil decides

Just like fine wine, the soil determines the quality of an essential oil. Swiss stone pine reaches its full power at Alpine altitudes – between 1,500 and 2,500 metres, where the tree produces far more protective compounds under extreme conditions. These very terpenes are what we love as the characteristic forest scent. Lemon needs the Mediterranean soils of Italy for its high limonene content.

Careful selection

We work exclusively with specialised producers who grow or harvest their plants where they reach their greatest potency. Each oil is sourced from where the plant finds its optimal growing conditions. Eucalyptus from regions with high solar radiation, bergamot from Italian groves, mountain pine from Alpine altitudes – the origin makes the difference.

The art of distillation

Gentle extraction

Good essential oils require time. Industrial mass production often uses too much heat and pressure, destroying fragile top notes and denaturing the most valuable molecules. The oils we select are instead obtained through gentle steam distillation – at controlled temperatures and with the right timing. The steam is given time to release even the heavy, precious molecules without "burning" them.

The result: depth and complexity

The result is a scent that is deep and multi-layered – with top, heart, and base notes that unfold over hours. Take our true lavender for example: first you perceive the fresh, slightly herbal top note. After a few minutes, the floral heart note opens up. And finally, a warm, gentle base tone remains. Industrially produced lavender often smells flat and one-dimensional – because the sensitive molecules were destroyed during extraction.

Organic – out of respect for your body

Why organic is essential for essential oils

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant essences. To produce 10 ml of Swiss stone pine oil, approximately 1.5 kg of plant material is needed. This means: if a plant has been treated with pesticides, those toxins end up concentrated in your bottle. With conventional farming, residues of herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides can enter the final product – and you then inhale them through your diffuser or apply them to your skin.

Our promise

That's why our essential oils are organic quality. This guarantees the absence of chemical pesticides and artificial fertilisers in cultivation. Whether in a diffuser, in massage, or as a room spray – you should absorb the power of nature, not chemicals. For us, organic isn't a marketing claim but a matter of respect: for your body, for the environment, and for the plants themselves.

Who we are

A South Tyrolean family business

Viworo is a family business from Lana in South Tyrol, Italy, founded in 1989. Since 2015, the current generation has been carrying on the business – with the same passion for natural products, but a fresh, modern approach. We're not a factory or a large corporation. We're a small team that uses the oils we recommend every single day. When you order from us, we personally pack your order in Lana.

Our role: curating, not producing

We are not producers – and that's by design. Our strength lies in curation: we carefully select the best oils from specialised producers, verify quality and purity, and put together a thoughtful range for you. So you don't get just "any" lavender oil, but exactly the one that meets our strict quality standards. We personally test every oil before it enters our shop.

The "paper test" – recognising quality at home

How can you recognise quality at home? With a simple test anyone can do:

  1. Place one drop of essential oil (e.g. lemon or lavender) on blotting paper or a coffee filter.
  2. Wait a few hours until the drop has completely evaporated.
  3. Check the paper: a pure essential oil evaporates completely, leaving no greasy ring behind. What remains is only the memory of the scent.

What does this mean? If a greasy spot remains, the oil has been diluted with a carrier oil. If a sticky residue remains, it contains synthetic additives. Clean paper = pure oil. This test works particularly well with citrus and herb oils. Resinous and wood oils like Swiss stone pine may leave light traces – this is normal for these thicker oils.

Frequently asked questions

What sets Viworo apart from other essential oil suppliers?

We are a small South Tyrolean family business specialising in natural products since 1989. We carefully curate the best organic oils from specialised producers and personally test every oil. With us, you won't find mass-produced products, but hand-selected quality with full transparency about origin and ingredients.

Why are your essential oils organic?

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant essences. For 10 ml, you often need over 1 kg of plant material. If that material is contaminated with pesticides, the residues end up concentrated in the oil. Organic guarantees that no chemical pesticides or artificial fertilisers were used – meaning a pure, uncontaminated end product for you.

Does Viworo produce the essential oils itself?

No – and that's by design. Distilling essential oils requires specialised expertise and experience. We work with experienced producers who specialise in specific plants and regions. Our strength lies in curation: we select the best oils, verify quality, and put together a thoughtful range.

What does "chemotype" mean for essential oils?

The chemotype (ct.) describes the predominant chemical composition of an essential oil. The same plant species can develop different chemical profiles depending on location, climate, and altitude. For example, thyme can be more antibacterial (ct. thymol) or more skin-friendly (ct. linalool) depending on its chemotype. The chemotype is crucial for proper use.

How do I recognise a high-quality essential oil?

Look for: botanical name (in Latin) on the label, chemotype indication, country of origin, organic labelling, and the designation "100% pure essential oil". Dark glass bottles protect the oil from UV light. Be sceptical of very low prices – genuine rose oil, for example, costs significantly more than lavender oil, as approximately 5 kg of rose petals are needed for just 1 ml of rose oil.
