Simply explained: how to scent your room properly, without overdoing it

Here you will learn how the fine mist is created, how many drops are usually enough, how much water to add and how to keep your diffuser clean.

Are ultrasonic diffusers harmful?

With normal, correct use there is no reason to worry. Use clean water and pure essential oils, and start with a pleasant, low scent intensity. If the scent becomes too strong for you, use fewer drops next time or briefly air the room.

How does an ultrasonic diffuser work?

Inside the water tank there is a small membrane. It vibrates very quickly and turns the water into a fine, cool mist. The essential oils added to the water are dispersed around the room together with this mist. No flame or hot steam is needed.

1

Add water

Only add as much water as you need for the desired running time. Do not exceed the MAX line.

2

A fine mist forms

The ultrasonic membrane creates tiny water droplets. The visible mist stays cool.

3

The scent spreads

A gentle stream of air carries the mist and the scent into the room.

Important Depending on the plant, pure essential oils contain different natural constituents. For many oils, antibacterial properties have been studied in the laboratory. In an ultrasonic diffuser they are mainly used to create a pleasant room scent. The diffuser does not replace normal cleaning or a tested disinfectant.

How to use your diffuser comfortably and mindfully

An ultrasonic diffuser is easy to use. With a suitable oil, a pleasant scent intensity and a good spot, a soothing room atmosphere is quickly created.

  • Use pure oils that are intended for room diffusion.
  • Start with a few drops and adjust the scent gradually.
  • Do not place the diffuser directly in a strong draft.
  • Only add as much water as you really need.
  • Choose a stable, moisture-resistant spot.
  • Follow the device's simple care instructions.
Good to know: pure essential oils

Many pure essential oils show antibacterial properties in laboratory studies. How strong these properties are depends on the oil, its composition and the amount used. When scenting a living space, the fragrance is what matters most.

Ultrasonic diffuser or humidifier?

Both devices can look similar and work with ultrasound. Their actual purpose, however, is different.

Ultrasonic diffuser

  • spreads a pleasant scent
  • usually uses a smaller amount of water
  • the amount of water mainly determines the running time
  • use only suitable essential oils

Ultrasonic humidifier

  • specifically increases air humidity
  • usually has a larger tank
  • change the water regularly and keep the tank clean
  • only add oils if the manufacturer explicitly allows it
Is an ultrasonic humidifier harmful? The technology itself is not automatically harmful. Problems can arise if water sits in the tank for a long time or the device is not cleaned. Change the water regularly and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

How many drops of essential oil go in the diffuser?

The simple answer

On average, 5–6 drops are enough. This is not a fixed upper limit: in a small room or with an intense oil, less may be sufficient. In a large, open or well-ventilated room, a few more drops may cautiously be needed. Start low, wait about ten minutes and only increase by one drop at a time if needed.

Room size

In small rooms the scent builds up more quickly. In a large living room it spreads over a bigger area.

Windows and drafts

Open windows, doors or air conditioning carry the scent away more quickly. Do not place the diffuser directly in the draft.

Air humidity

A scent can be perceived differently in dry and humid air. Wait a moment before adding more drops.

Strength of the oil

Black pepper, mint or eucalyptus can feel very intense. Delicate citrus or floral scents are often perceived as lighter.

How much water goes in the diffuser?

The amount of water mainly determines how long the diffuser runs. For a short session, use less water. For a longer running time, add more without exceeding the MAX mark.

1

Short session

Only add a little water if you want to use the diffuser for a short time.

2

Longer session

Add correspondingly more water. The exact running time depends on the model and the mist level.

3

Automatic shut-off

Viworo diffusers switch off automatically as soon as the water is used up.

Water and drops have different jobs The amount of water mainly determines the running time. The number of drops determines the scent intensity. More water therefore does not automatically mean that much more oil is needed.

How to clean your diffuser properly

Oil residues, limescale and standing water can affect mist production. A simple care routine keeps the tank clean.

Only add the water you need

Choose the amount of water to match the desired running time. The device switches off automatically when the water is used up.

Every 6–8 uses

Unplug the device and wipe out the tank with a soft cloth and a little diluted household vinegar. Then wipe with clean water and dry. Never immerse the electrical base in water.

When changing scents

Rinse the tank briefly so the new scent does not mix with strong residues of the previous oil.

Before a longer break

If there is water left, empty the tank. Clean it and let it dry completely with the lid open.

Practical tips for beginners

1

Place it safely

Put the device on a level, moisture-resistant surface and not right at the edge.

2

Aim the mist correctly

Do not point it directly at your face, bed, wall, delicate furniture or electrical devices.

3

Start with less

Start lower the first time you use it. After ten minutes, check whether the scent is strong enough.

4

Change the spot first

If there is a strong draft, move the diffuser first instead of immediately adding many more drops.

5

Count the blend as a whole

With several oils, the total amount counts: three drops plus three drops already make six.

6

Store it dry

Before longer breaks, clean the tank and let it dry completely with the lid open.

Frequently asked questions about ultrasonic diffusers

Are ultrasonic diffusers harmful?

With normal, correct use there is no reason to worry. Use clean water, pure suitable oils and a scent intensity that feels pleasant to you.

How many drops should I use?

On average, 5–6 drops are enough. This is not a fixed maximum. In small rooms or with intense oils, less may be sufficient; in large or well-ventilated rooms, cautiously a little more may be needed.

How much water should I add?

Only add as much water as you need for the desired running time and do not exceed the MAX mark. The Viworo diffuser switches off automatically when the water is used up.

Can I run the diffuser at night?

Use only the amount of water needed for the planned running time and follow the device instructions. As soon as the water is used up, the device switches off automatically.

How often should I clean the diffuser?

A more thorough cleaning is useful roughly every 6–8 uses. With the device unplugged, wipe out the tank with a soft cloth and a little diluted household vinegar. Then wipe with clean water and dry.

Why is there only a little mist?

Check the water level, the position of the lid, the power supply and the cleanliness of the membrane. Clean the device only as described in the instructions and do not scratch the membrane.

Ultrasonic diffuser or aroma diffuser – what's the difference?

They belong to the same category of devices: aroma diffuser is the general term, while ultrasonic diffuser describes the technology used. The ultrasonic mist maker is the most common design for water and essential oils – in shops and guides you will find both terms for the same type of device.

Find the right diffuser for your room

Compare tank size, timer and mist levels. Before buying, check which oils and which type of water are intended for the model in question.
