How to use & what makes it special
Targeted uses:
In the diffuser: 3–5 drops for a warm, woody atmosphere – a classic in the living room or bedroom, for a maximum of 30 minutes at a time. For a warming massage after a long day, dilute 2–3 drops in 10 ml of carrier oil (e. g. organic Sweet Almond Oil or organic MCT oil) and massage in gently. A classic in the wardrobe: place a cotton pad with 2–3 drops between your woollen jumpers and refresh it every few weeks. In the sauna: add 1–2 drops to the sauna pouring water for an alpine sauna experience. Tip: 3 drops of Swiss Stone Pine + 2 drops of Fine Lavender in the diffuser – a classic evening blend with a warm, floral character. Want to make your own room spray? In our guide to Swiss Stone Pine spray we show you step by step how to do it.
Perfect blending partners
Swiss Stone Pine is a warm base note with a woody, resinous, balsamic character:
- For alpine harmony: Mountain Pine (two alpine pines combined – a forest walk in a bottle, fresh and grounding).
- For floral calm: Fine Lavender (warm wood meets soft blossom – a harmonious combination for the evening).
- For a cosy evening atmosphere: Sweet Orange (woody warmth meets sweet citrus – a comforting evening scent).

From our South Tyrolean mountains
High above the treeline, where only the most resilient trees survive, the Swiss Stone Pine stands as a guardian of the alpine landscape. For generations, its warm, resinous wood has been a defining feature of South Tyrolean parlour and living culture – a living piece of alpine tradition.
Swiss Stone Pine vs. Mountain Pine vs. Scots Pine: Three pines, three botanical characters. The Swiss Stone Pine (Pinus cembra, this oil) is the warmest and woodiest of the three – with the most resinous, balsamic scent profile. It grows at the highest altitudes (1,500–2,500 m). The Mountain Pine (Pinus mugo) is fresher and more camphor-like in scent. The Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris) is balanced and turpentine-like – the classic “pine” scent. The Swiss Stone Pine is the rarest and most prized of the three.

Intensity: Medium – warm, woody and gently lingering. A scent that calls to mind mountain huts and wood-panelled parlours.
Professor’s knowledge: the scent marker
What makes the scent of the Swiss Stone Pine so characteristic is, above all, one molecule: Bornyl acetate. This ester is the true scent marker of Pinus cembra and is responsible for the warm, balsamic-sweet note that sets Swiss Stone Pine oil apart from all other pine oils. It is joined by Alpha-pinene (15–35 %), which shapes the fresh, resinous forest character, along with Beta-pinene, Camphene and a touch of Limonene, which lend the profile a gentle brightness. Together they create an aroma that feels woody and bright, resinous and soft, all at once.
More about the plant and tradition
The Swiss Stone Pine (Pinus cembra) is one of the oldest and slowest-growing tree species in the Alps – some specimens are over 1,000 years old. Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
What is the difference between Swiss Stone Pine and Mountain Pine?
The Swiss Stone Pine (Pinus cembra, this oil) is warmer, woodier and more resinous in scent – with a pronounced balsamic sweetness thanks to bornyl acetate. The Mountain Pine (Pinus mugo) is fresher, more camphor-like and sharper in scent. Both come from the South Tyrolean Alps but complement each other very differently in the diffuser.
Is this the same as “Zirbe” or “Cirmolo”?
Yes. “Swiss Stone Pine” is the English name, “Zirbelkiefer” or “Zirbe” the German name, and “Cirmolo” the Italian name. All three refer to Pinus cembra – the same tree, the same oil. You can read more on our information page about the Swiss Stone Pine.
Can I use it for children?
In the diffuser, Swiss Stone Pine oil is traditionally also used in households with children from 3 years old – in a low dose (1–2 drops) and for short diffuser intervals. For skin application on children, dilute heavily (1 drop in 10 ml of carrier oil). If in doubt, seek medical advice.
Why is Swiss Stone Pine oil more expensive than other pine oils?
The Swiss Stone Pine grows extremely slowly at high altitudes and yields less essential oil per kilogram of raw material than other pine species. On top of that, harvesting in alpine terrain is demanding. This makes Swiss Stone Pine oil one of the rarest and most precious pine oils of all.
How should I store the oil?
Keep it away from direct light and heat sources. The amber glass bottle protects against UV radiation. Close it tightly after use. Stored correctly, Swiss Stone Pine oil keeps its quality for several years and often develops a slightly richer, more complex character over time.
