The Professor's Insight: The Scent Profile
Peppermint is a Top Note with an intense, penetrating character. Its composition is a masterpiece: menthol (~39%) for freshness, menthone (~22%) for the minty body, and menthofuran (~3%) – the secret molecule that gives it the sharp, unmistakable character. The paradox? It contains less menthol than corn mint (~73%), yet it feels more intense and penetrating. The secret is menthofuran: just a few percent completely transform the scent profile. In blends it's the "ice note": it dominates, defines and gives character to any composition.
The Plant
Mentha × piperita is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Unlike corn mint (a pure species), peppermint is a natural hybrid – born from the cross between watermint (M. aquatica) and spearmint (M. spicata).
Known and valued for centuries worldwide, peppermint is arguably the most famous of all mints. Its essential oil is among the most widely used in aromatherapy. Extensively cultivated in India, where the climate favours a particularly rich and aromatic chemical composition.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the difference between peppermint and corn mint?
Peppermint has a more intense, penetrating character thanks to menthofuran (~3%), a molecule absent in corn mint. Corn mint, on the other hand, has nearly double the menthol (~73% vs ~39%), but paradoxically feels softer and sweeter.
Can I apply the oil directly to my skin?
Never neat! Like all essential oils, it must always be diluted in a carrier oil. We recommend a dilution of 2% (approximately 3-4 drops per 10 ml of carrier oil such as our Organic MCT Oil).
How do I use it in the diffuser?
3-5 drops in the diffuser are sufficient for a medium-sized room. It blends beautifully with lemon for an energising atmosphere or lavender to balance the intensity with softness.
Is it suitable for children?
No. Oils containing menthol and menthofuran are not suitable for infants and young children – they can trigger respiratory spasm. For children over 6 years, only very low doses in the diffuser. For the littlest ones, lavender is the safer choice.
Which oils blend best with Peppermint?
Peppermint harmonises beautifully with lemon, litsea cubeba, lavender, rosemary, Swiss stone pine and eucalyptus. As an intense top note, it adds character and penetrating freshness to every blend.
How should I store the oil?
Keep away from direct light and heat sources. The amber glass bottle protects the oil from UV radiation. Close tightly after use.
