It is the ultimate Alpine survivor – native to the high mountain regions of the Alps and Carpathians, where it grows at altitudes of 1,500 to 2,500 metres, often forming the uppermost tree line. The tree grows slowly, reaching 15-25 metres over decades, with a distinctive rounded crown that becomes more gnarled and sculptural with age. Some stone pines are over 1,000 years old. The wood is light, soft and beautifully aromatic – it has been used for centuries in Alpine architecture, particularly for bedroom panelling (the famous "Zirbenstube").
