California Poppy Extract (Eschscholzia californica)
Traditionally used for relaxing moments. Hydroalcoholic 1:1 extract from the golden flower petals of California Poppy. Made in a specialised laboratory in Italy.
Many people know this:
- The day was long, the mind is still in work mode.
- You need a clear transition into evening.
- No pills – a plant of tradition feels better.
This is where California Poppy steps in.
The golden plant of California
California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) has been California’s state flower since 1903. Its golden-orange flowers open with the sun and close at sunset – a perfect symbol for the transition into evening.
Native Californian peoples knew the plant long before European botanists, traditionally used for relaxing moments. Important: not an opium poppy – a completely different genus, without morphine or codeine. Alcohol content: 30% Vol.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is California Poppy an opium poppy?
No, absolutely not. California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) belongs to the Papaveraceae family, but it is a completely different genus from the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). It does not contain morphine, codeine or any of the substances found in the opium poppy.
Why such a complicated name?
The scientific name Eschscholzia honours Johann Friedrich von Eschscholtz (1793-1831), a German-Baltic botanist who participated in Otto von Kotzebue’s exploratory expedition along the California coast. He was one of the first European botanists to describe this plant.
California Poppy extract dosage – how much should I take?
The suggested amount is 5 to 10 drops in a glass of water or herbal tea, twice a day, ideally in the evening. Start with the lower dose the first time and see how it feels.
Can I take California Poppy extract for sleep?
Many people include California Poppy extract in their evening wind-down routine – similar to a herbal tea. When and how you use it in your daily life is a personal choice.
California Poppy drops or capsules – which format is better?
Liquid drops give you two advantages: flexible dosing (5, 7, or 10 drops depending on the moment) and the hydroalcoholic 1:1 extraction preserves the full plant spectrum. Capsules offer standardised amounts and are easier on the go, but less flexible.
Does California Poppy cause morning grogginess?
The extract contains only plant-based constituents – no synthetic hangover effect. Sensitivity still varies from person to person: start with a small dose and increase only if you feel good with it.
Can I combine California Poppy with Valerian or Passionflower?
California Poppy is traditionally used alongside Red Poppy, Passionflower, Valerian, and Lemon Balm. If you take prescription sleep medication, talk to your doctor first.
How should I store the extract?
Away from light and heat sources. Refrigeration is not necessary.
