The plant's most distinctive feature is its white to pale lilac flowers with extremely long stamens that project far beyond the corolla β giving the plant an appearance reminiscent of a cat's whiskers. This is the origin of its common name. The scientific name Orthosiphon derives from the Greek orthos (straight) and siphon (tube), referring to the straight corolla tube. The name stamineus comes from the Latin stamen, emphasising the prominent stamens. In Indonesia, the plant is traditionally known as "Java tea".
The leaves are harvested during flowering, when the active compound content is at its peak.
