Application & Special Features
Application:
In a diffuser for a warm, spicy atmosphere. Diluted in carrier oil for warming massages. For winter room blends and festive atmospheres.
Targeted uses:
In a diffuser (1-2 drops – clove is very intense!) for a warm, protective atmosphere – the perfect oil for the cold season. For a warming massage, dilute 1 drop in 10 ml of carrier oil (e.g. Organic MCT Oil). Important: Clove oil is extremely potent – always use sparingly and in very low dilution. A single drop goes a remarkably long way.
Perfect Blending Partners
Clove is a warm middle-to-base note with a richly spicy, comforting character:
- For the winter classic: Sweet Orange (the Christmas blend – warm spice meets sweet citrus, pure comfort).
- For citrus brightness: Lemon (bright freshness lifts and balances the deep spice warmth).
- For calming warmth: Lavender (floral calm softens the spice intensity – surprisingly beautiful together).

The Scent of Winter Evenings
Mulled wine, gingerbread, festive warmth – clove is the aromatic thread that runs through our favourite winter memories. One drop, and you're home.
Handle with respect: Clove oil is one of the most potent essential oils available. Its high eugenol content (70-85%) makes it extremely effective but also demanding. Always use in very low dilution (max. 0.5% for skin, i.e. 1 drop per 10 ml carrier oil). In the diffuser, 1-2 drops are enough. This is not a "more is better" oil – a little goes an extraordinarily long way.

The Professor's Knowledge: The Scent Note
Clove oil is dominated by Eugenol (70-85%), a phenylpropanoid that is one of nature's most remarkable molecules. Eugenol has been studied extensively for its antimicrobial, analgesic and antioxidant properties – it's the reason clove has been used in dentistry for centuries. In fact, eugenol is still a key ingredient in dental cement today. Eugenyl acetate (8-15%) is the ester of eugenol, adding a sweeter, fruitier dimension that makes clove bud oil more complex and elegant than clove leaf oil. beta-Caryophyllene (5-10%) is a sesquiterpene with a remarkable property: it interacts with the body's CB2 receptors – the same system targeted by cannabinoids. This makes beta-caryophyllene one of the most pharmacologically interesting terpenes in nature. Together, these compounds create an oil of extraordinary potency. The same concentration that makes clove so effective also demands respect: always use in minimal amounts.
The Plant
Eugenia caryophyllus (Clove Tree, also Syzygium aromaticum) is an evergreen tree from the Myrtaceae (myrtle) family. Native to the Moluccas (Spice Islands) of Indonesia, it has shaped world history – the clove trade drove European exploration and colonisation of Southeast Asia. The tree reaches 10-15 metres in height and can live for over 100 years. The "cloves" we know are the dried, unopened flower buds – harvested by hand just before they bloom. The name comes from the French "clou" (nail), which the dried buds resemble. The essential oil is steam-distilled from these buds, capturing the intense, warm aroma that has been prized in kitchens, apothecaries and perfumeries for millennia.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why is clove oil so expensive compared to other oils?
Clove bud oil is distilled from hand-picked, unopened flower buds – a labour-intensive harvest. The buds must be picked at exactly the right moment before opening. This craft of harvesting, combined with organic certification, is reflected in the price. However, because clove oil is used in tiny amounts (1-2 drops at a time), a 10 ml bottle lasts a very long time.
What is the difference between clove bud and clove leaf oil?
Clove bud oil (this product) contains eugenyl acetate, which adds sweetness and complexity. Clove leaf oil has higher eugenol but lacks this ester, making it sharper and less refined. Bud oil is preferred in aromatherapy for its more balanced, richer scent profile.
Can I use clove oil for dental care?
Clove oil has a long tradition in dental care due to its eugenol content. For temporary relief, apply a single drop to a cotton bud and dab on the affected area. However, this is a first-aid measure only – always consult a dentist for dental problems. Never swallow the oil.
Is clove oil safe for the skin?
Only in very low dilution (max. 0.5%, i.e. 1 drop per 10 ml carrier oil). Eugenol is a potent skin irritant at higher concentrations. Always perform a patch test. Never use undiluted. Not suitable for sensitive skin or facial application.
Is clove oil suitable for children?
Not recommended for children under 6 years. The high eugenol content is too potent for young children. For older children, use only in the diffuser in minimal amounts (1 drop) and for short periods.
How should I store the oil?
Keep away from direct light and heat sources. The amber glass bottle protects the oil from UV radiation. Close tightly after use. Clove oil retains its quality for several years when stored correctly.
