Propolis is a resinous substance collected by honeybees from tree buds, bark and other botanical sources. Bees use it to seal and protect their hive β a kind of natural putty that lines the inner walls and entrance of their home.
The name "propolis" comes from the Greek pro (before) and polis (city), meaning "before the city" β because bees apply it at the entrance of their hive to protect it. Propolis has been known in beekeeping and the herbal tradition since antiquity. Its composition is complex and contains resins, waxes, essential oils and pollen, with proportions varying depending on the local flora and season.
