      Bilberry Extract (Vaccinium myrtillus)

Hydroalcoholic extract from the fruit of the European bilberry. Made in a specialised laboratory in Italy with a 1:1 extraction ratio.

Bilberry extract in bottle with dropper

      What is bilberry extract

An extract obtained from the fruit of the European bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.), a small wild shrub found throughout European forests with a long tradition in phytotherapy. The extraction uses a hydroalcoholic method at a 1:1 ratio, preserving the full active compound profile of the fruit.

Made in a specialised laboratory in Italy. Alcohol content: 30% vol.

The plant: European Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus)

The European bilberry is a small, deciduous dwarf shrub from the Ericaceae (heather) family, found throughout Europe and Northern Asia. It typically grows in forests, moorlands and heathlands on acidic soils, reaching a height of 15-60 cm. Its leaves are small, oval and bright green with finely serrated edges.

The fruit are small, round berries of a dark blue-purple colour that ripen in summer, between July and August. Unlike the cultivated American blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum), the European bilberry has dark purple flesh throughout the entire fruit – not just in the skin. The name myrtillus derives from the Latin myrtus (myrtle), because the plant's leaves resemble those of myrtle.

The fruit is harvested in summer, between July and August, when fully ripe.

      Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Where does the name "myrtillus" come from?

The scientific name myrtillus derives from the Latin myrtus (myrtle), because bilberry leaves resemble those of myrtle in shape. The diminutive suffix "-illus" refers to the plant's small size.

Is this the same as supermarket blueberries?

Not exactly. Vaccinium myrtillus is the European bilberry (wild) – smaller and with dark purple flesh throughout the entire fruit. The blueberries commonly sold in supermarkets are typically cultivated American blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum), which are larger with pale flesh and a blue skin.

Why does the extract colour the water?

European bilberry fruit contains anthocyanins that give them their intense blue-purple colour. This natural plant pigment may lightly colour the water when the drops are added.

Which plant family does bilberry belong to?

Bilberry belongs to the Ericaceae (heather) family, the same family as rhododendrons, heather and cranberries. It is a plant family that thrives on acidic soils.

Can I use the extract daily?

Yes, bilberry extract is suitable for daily use. It is recommended to follow the indicated dosage (5-10 drops, twice daily).

How long does a bottle last?

It depends on dosage. With regular use of 10 drops twice daily, the 30 ml format lasts about 3-4 weeks. The 100 ml format lasts several months.

How should I store the extract?

Away from light and heat sources. Refrigeration is not necessary.
