The plant: Greater Plantain (Plantago major)
Greater plantain is a perennial herbaceous plant from the Plantaginaceae family, found throughout Europe and much of the world. It is easily recognised by its large, oval leaves arranged in a basal rosette and the slender flower spikes that rise from the centre of the plant.
It grows wild along footpaths, in meadows, by roadsides and on wasteland – practically everywhere. It is precisely because of this constant, familiar presence that it has been one of the most widely used plants in the European herbal tradition since antiquity. The name Plantago derives from the Latin planta (sole of the foot), as the leaves lie flat against the ground.
The leaves are harvested during the growing season, when the active compound content is at its peak.
