The Plant
Canarium luzonicum is a tropical tree belonging to the Burseraceae family – the same family as frankincense (Boswellia) and myrrh (Commiphora). Native to the Philippines and Southeast Asia, it can reach up to 30 metres in height and produces a soft, fragrant resin from its bark.
The word "elemi" may derive from the Arabic "as-salimi" (meaning "above and below"), a reference to the dual nature of the resin – earthly yet spiritual. For centuries it was used in the Philippines for the preparation of salves and balms. It reached Europe through trade routes with the East and was soon prized by perfumers. What exactly is Elemi oil?
Elemi is an essential oil obtained from the resin of the Canarium luzonicum tree – a close relative of frankincense and myrrh. It has a fresh, citrusy and balsamic scent – much brighter and more modern than its famous "cousins".
Can I apply the oil directly to my skin?
Never neat! Like all essential oils, it must always be diluted in a carrier oil. We recommend a dilution of 2% (approximately 3-4 drops per 10 ml of carrier oil such as our Organic MCT Oil).
How do I use it in the diffuser?
3-5 drops in the diffuser are sufficient for a medium-sized room. It blends beautifully with lemon for a bright atmosphere or lavender for a moment of contemplation.
Is the oil suitable for children?
For children over 6 years, very low doses can be used in the diffuser. For younger children, gentler oils such as lavender are preferable. If in doubt, consult a professional.
