The Professor’s Insight: The Scent Profile
Caraway is a Heart Note with a distinctive yet inviting character. Unlike typical herbal oils such as rosemary (fresh and camphoraceous) or lavender (floral and sweet), caraway brings a unique spicy warmth. It contains mainly carvone and limonene – the same limonene found in citrus fruits, which gives it that subtle brightness in the scent. In blends it adds body and character, beautifully connecting fresh top notes with deep base notes. Ideal for creating "comfort blends" during the cold season.
The Plant
Carum carvi is a biennial plant belonging to the Apiaceae family (Umbellifers) – the same family as fennel, dill and coriander. Native to Europe and Western Asia, caraway thrives in temperate climates and reaches a height of 30-60 cm with delicate white umbel flowers.
Caraway is one of Europe's oldest spices, used since antiquity. Seeds have been found in prehistoric settlements. In the Middle Ages it was considered indispensable in monasteries and kitchens – both as a spice and as a traditional household remedy. Our raw material comes from Hungary, one of the most renowned caraway-growing regions.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do I best use Caraway oil?
For room diffusion, add 3-5 drops to the diffuser. For abdominal massage, dilute 2-3 drops in 10 ml of carrier oil and massage clockwise. For a relaxing bath, mix 3 drops with an emulsifier (honey or cream) before adding to the bathwater.
Is this the same as cumin?
No! Carum carvi is caraway (also called meridian fennel), the spice typically found in bread and sauerkraut. Cumin (Cuminum cyminum) is an entirely different plant with a completely different aroma – more oriental and pungent.
Can I apply the oil directly to my skin?
Never neat! Essential oils must always be diluted in a carrier oil. For caraway we recommend a dilution of 1-2% (approximately 2-3 drops per 10 ml of carrier oil).
Is the oil suitable for children?
Caraway has a long tradition for little ones too, but the essential oil should only be used with extreme caution and in very low dilution. Please consult a professional before using on children.
Which oils blend best with Caraway?
Caraway harmonises beautifully with sweet orange, lemon, lavender, fennel, Swiss stone pine and coriander. As a spicy heart note, it adds warmth and character to blends.
How should I store the oil?
Keep away from direct light and heat sources. The amber glass bottle protects the oil from UV radiation. Close tightly after use.
